How to price your freelance services in India
Stop guessing your rates. A simple income-target method that tells you exactly what to charge per hour, per project, and per month.
The income-target method
Most freelancers price backwards: they look at what others charge and pick a number that feels safe. That guarantees you earn whatever someone else decided was enough for you.
A better way is to start from the number you actually need. Decide your monthly income target, divide it by the hours you can realistically bill, and you have your minimum rate.
If your target is ₹1,00,000 a month and you can bill 22 days × 6 hours, your floor is about ₹758 per hour. Anything below that and you are subsidising your own time.
Account for unbillable hours
The biggest pricing mistake is confusing total working hours with billable hours. Admin, proposals, emails, and rework are all work — they are just not billable.
A rule of thumb: only 60-70% of your working time is billable. If you plan 8 working hours a day, price as if you have 5-6. Our Freelancer Rate Calculator uses exactly this assumption.
Raise your rate, not your hours
There is a hard ceiling on hours. There is no ceiling on rate. Every year you should be raising your rate by the value of your experience, not by working longer.
When a client pushes back on price, resist the instinct to discount. Discounting trains clients to expect it. Instead, adjust scope: fewer pages, fewer revisions, shorter timeline. The rate stays.
