Frequently asked questions
Quick answers before you start.
How do I add VAT to a price?
If your amount is exclusive of VAT, multiply it by the rate and add it on top. At 20%, 1,000 becomes 1,200. This calculator's 'exclusive' mode does exactly that.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
If the amount already includes VAT, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to find the base. At 20%, 1,200 inclusive is 1,000 base plus 200 VAT. Use the 'inclusive' mode.
Which VAT rate should I use?
VAT rates are set per country and range from about 5% to 27%, with 20–23% common across the UK and EU. Pick the rate for the country you are selling into, and confirm it with your accountant — reduced rates apply to some goods.
